.: Smart Watches :.

Oh how, I hadn’t posted anything in here for ages. This is what happens when I’m trying to maintain too many blogs!
I’ve moved the Lego Mum Diaries into it’s own blog, then there’s also the MissLilly’s Journeys not to mention the To Be Blamed blog. Too many potentially, I might need to revisit which ones I really keep shortly.
Anyway, since the concept of the smart watches came out, I’ve been looking for a decent one I could wear myself, but guess what there weren’t any. It’s all too sporty and too big for a ladies wrist. Recently there’s been some really good models a bit more fashionable.

Main reasons why I want a smart watch:

  • Because it’s cool (I love technology)
  • Not to miss any nursery calls because my phone was I don’t know where

Pretty much I wanted

  • something simple that would fit on my wrist nicely,
  • Android Wear 2.0 (which is the latest Android software) as I own an Android phone
  • NFC so I could use it for payments (Android Pay) without the need to use my wallet or my phone

Sounds a simple request right? What if I tell you that currently there’s no smatch watch that offers the 3 things above? (Not for a lady)

Here’s the ones I’ve considered:

Moto 360 – 2nd Gen

I remember looking into them, and there was even an option called the moto maker where you could design your watch completely, but that’s now gone from UK. I couldn’t find the models I wanted anymore anywhere, not entirely sure what happened with Morotola in UK. This was the closest available on amazon (here) In fact if you go to Motorola’s web page in UK there’s no mention of the smart watches anymore. But they looked pretty nice.

Fossil Q Wander

Well, I’ve been a fan of fossil watches for a long time now and I own a few of them, so when they’ve announced they had an Android Smart Watch I was really in love with it. The design is pretty much the same of the Moto 360

Unlike the Moto 360 there’s no 42mm version, which would be perfect for a women’s wrist, but actually even at 45mm doesn’t feel big. It’s also really light as well.

Pros:

  • From the Android Wear phones this is the best design for ladies
  • Priced at £229 it’s one of the cheapest Android Wear phones as well
  • Interchangeable straps which are really easy to replace

Cons:

  • No NFC! Why oh why! I’ve contacted the customer service and it seems a new generation will be coming out Sep / October but they are not sure yet if they’ll have NFC either. This is quite a big downside (for me at least)
  • The screen is not as good as some of the competition, but in a phone I’m not picky about screen quality as I would be on my mobile phone

Huawei W1 Watch

This looks pretty good as well

This one also priced at £239.

But again, no NFC! Only the 2nd generation has it, but then it’s a sports watch

Samsung Gear 3

This is, I would say, the best Android Watch. They don’t have Android Pay but that’s because Samsung has their own application. Ultimately you can use pay powered by NFC. Samsung is also the only smart watch (that I know off), that allows to hold a stand alone phone card, so if your phone dies out you can re-route your calls to your phone. This is pretty cool too. But then look at the design

I’ve tried my best to like it. I did. But it looked huge and heavy on my wrist. I was thinking of changing the strap to something like this:

But I just hate the metal crown.

The screen quality of the samsung is also the best available. But ultimately it was double the price of the Fossil one, priced at around £349. Would I pay almost double the price to get NFC but get an uglier watch?

Nah

I’ve ended up going for the Fossil Q Wander, but I’m still upset it doesn’t hold NFC. It is really a big shame. Good that the watches are evolving and there are a lot more options available now 🙂

Do you have a smart watch? Any feedback? Are you considering getting one?

.: Dress with less :.

Recently there’s been quite a trend of de-clutter or simply owning less. I guess if space becomes so expensive the more the need to rationalise what we have. Having just moved houses and being forced to pack all I have in boxes, we’ve realized we have quite a lot more than I imaged. How many things do you have in your wardrobe that you don’t even remember you have at all?

I’ve packed a few things and used the container downstairs which is used to donate clothing (in good conditions) to people that may need it. If I analyse what I have I’m sure I can find  more things that I don’t really need.

On this lines, I was just reading about Project 33. As the name says it means owning a total of 33 pieces (including accessories). Not sure if I can really come down to 33, not when you are supposed to dress professionally all the time and every day you are expected to come to the office with a different outfit (even if you use the same pieces to create a different look). The expectations on women are quite demanding! Whereas my male-friends can go away with changing the shirt and having the same suit the whole week, not valid for us. But still it feels I have more than I need.

They have a lighter version which is choosing 33 pieces for the next 3 months (e.g. spring season), that seems more realistic. I may try that, but surely will try to think twice before buying anything extra. I tend to have a lot of underwear, e.g. white t-shirts which I use to save my shirts.

My Tips

Well, I’m not sure I’m a good example here, but here’s something I’ve started to do last year:

Need some inspiration?

Tim Gunn’s 10 key items may help you:

My List

1 – Little Black Dress

2 – Statement Necklace

3 – Day Dress

4 – Working trousers

5 – Sleeveless shirt

6 – Jacket

7 – Jumper

8 – Jeans (I have the same pair of jeans for the last 4 years!) and I have some jean-leggings as well

9 – Boots

10 – Flats – I have these flats for more than 3 years now, they are really comfortable!

11 – Leather bag – I have this bag for almost 4 years now, and I use it on a daily basis and it’s still impec! It’s a good idea to invest in a good bag, and by that I mean quality rather than brand. Mine still smells like leather!

Final tips:

  • Think about your existing colour pallet, if you go for soft tones: beige, white, light grey and then black they will always be trendy. You can then have 1 or 2 pieces in the colour of your choice to acessorise your wardrobe.
  • Save to a list before buying
  • Think about the items you love the most and why you love them and those you barely use.
  • Don’t fear to give away!

In a few months time I may show where I’ve got to 🙂 Good luck!

Online shopping

I surrender!

I’ve been doing online shopping for ages now, including clothing, cds, books, stuff I can’t find in the stores, but actually I was not a user of online grocery shopping. The reason being because it’s just 2 of us, and I wanted to select the fresh products from the supermarket. But after get tired of not having milk in the middle of the week, and spending time in queues, I’ve to say I’ve surrendered. First of all I have a bigger choice and I end up doing less impulsive shopping, and rather being a lot more organized. So far they’ve always been on time 🙂

Are you a fan of grocery online shopping?

Btw, coming up this weekend: diary of a week

On the topic of the resolutions

I really enjoy the idea of doing monthly resolutions, something like not going to the cinema during the whole month, or not drinking coffee (I can’t do the later, no way!), so I decided my January one:

* Not buying online

Resisting the shops is very easy for me because I rarely go there, but this applies anyway. I’m very addicted to buy stuff online: shoes, cds, books, clothing, accessories you name it. So my resolution for January is not to buy anything online. It’s so hard especially with the sales ongoing. Must… resist… temptation!
Ok the main goal after Jan. is really to think about it twice before doing impulsive shopping and be more rational about it, as I used to be: Do I really need this? And if I think I do need it, why? Can I find an alternative?
And I need to clean my closet. Fortunately I don’t have that many useless things as in clothing I don’t use, because I  used to be very rational about it… but then came online shopping. This is linked to my main goal of saving more this year.
So what I’m doing to help out, is saving the list of items I would think about buying, so I can review the full list and really see if I really need anything.
Exception is that I’m planning to start my photography online shop so I’ve ordered my photos and some wrapping material to start delivering my works.

Some insights about online shopping
Many people say they don’t like online shopping, well in my case as said I do a lot. But what I typically do (to avoid surprises) is to buy from online stores that also have a physical store, so that if something goes wrong I can always go there and return it.
Also I find the reviews of the products really helpful  Even if the store stuff can help us find the most appropriate product, the thing is they won’t say if the quality is bad, because ultimately they have to “protect their fish”.
The other thing is finding my size. Online I have the full access to the entire catalogue and can usually find my size. Again if it fails I will go to the store and exchange it.
It helps compare prices when the product is available from multiple stores.

I still enjoy visiting small local stores, that have unique products and very friendly staff. It’s a unique experience and we can’t let that experience die at all.

What about you, any resolution for January?
